DISMALS CANYON
A National Natural Landmark
You will start and
end your tour here
at the Rainbow
Falls. Notice the
Rainbow in the
right corner caused
by the sun
reflecting off the
water.

As you make your
way through the
winding and often
steep trails, you will
find landmarks
such as Burr's
Hideout where
Aaron Burr and
Jessie James once
hid. Fat Man's
Misery means just
that..you really
don't want to try it if
you're a big person.

The Grotto, Kitchen
and Indian Head
Rock are awesome.
Legend goes if you
look real close you
can see the profile
of an Indian Warrior
facing East, but I'm
told that only a
Kindred Spirit can
see him. Did I see
him?  What do you
think?

There's Witch's
Cavern, the Dance
Hall, Pulpit Rock
and a swinging
bridge that was a
little too shaky for
my wobbly legs.
Suffice it to say, I
was a little bit tired
after that 3 hour
hike.

I was amazed at the
way the trees have
grown leaning
every which way
trying to reach the
sun.  I took this
photo of two trees
making a cross.

The other unique
finding was the
erosion on the
surface of the rock.
 Don't they
resemble little
ghosties or
skeletons?

Booooo!

Dismals Canyon was designated
a "National Natural Landmark"
by the National Park Service in
1975. It is located in the upper
part of northwest Alabama right
across the Mississippi-Alabama
state line.  Located on Hwy 8, 12
miles south of Russellville, AL off
U.S. Hwy 43. And to think until
last week I never knew! I should
have known that because I grew
up in that area. I think it is a
beautifully well-kept secret. I was
told by the clerk working the day
my partner and I visited it that
"we don't advertise."  They have
a web site though.
www.dismalscanyon.com
We were fortunate we waited
until Friday to take this tour.
They're only open on weekends.

Sitting right in the middle of all this natural
beauty was one of Ron's favorite buds.
